OHIP Coverage – 30 days requirement or 153 days out of 183 days ) – FAQ

Q: I moved from Manitoba to Ontario recently. I was covered in Manitoba Health Plan, will I be required to be in Ontario for 153 days out of 183 days to be eligible for OHIP.

A: The OHIP administration says that if you are covered by health insurance from any province before moving to Ontario, this condition does NOT apply. So you are free to go out of Ontario for more than 30 days after establishing your residency in Ontario and OHIP will cover you for your doctor visits.

Q: I am a new immigrant coming to Toronto, ON from the UK and I am planning to do a trip to Japan, where my parents live, for 2 months. When will my OHIP coverage start?

A: Since you are a new immigrant in Ontario, you will need to wait for 3 months for your OHIP coverage to begin. Also since you are going to be out of Ontario for more than 30 days, your 3 month wait period will start on the day you are back from Japan to Ontario.

Option C Printout – unavailable because of recent immigration

If you had recently immigrated to Canada and would want to sponsor your spouse, you application may be returned saying that Option C Printout from CRA is missing.

To resolve the issue, get an employment letter from your employer. The letter shoudl state your title/designation, duration of employment and your annual salary. It would also be better if the letter states the salaries you received to date.
