Sponsorship Eligibility for Family Class Immigration for your Spouse

As a sponsor for your spouse, you must provide financial support for three years from the date your spouse becomes a permanent resident. Therefore, you have to meet certain income requirements.

It is very important that people whom you have sponsored before should not have turned to government for financial assistant. If they have taken the help from government in terms of financial assistance then you may not be allowed to sponsor another person.

Here are some important eligibility conditions that will determine if you will be approved as a sponsor.

  • failed to provide financial support you agreed to when you signed a sponsorship agreement to sponsor another relative in the past
  • any default on a court-ordered support order specifically towards alimony or child support
  • received government financial assistance ( disability assistance is fine )
  • were convicted of a violent criminal offence
  • late or missed payments on an immigration loan
  • are in prison
  • have declared bankruptcy and have not been released from it yet.

Option C Printout – unavailable because of recent immigration

If you had recently immigrated to Canada and would want to sponsor your spouse, you application may be returned saying that Option C Printout from CRA is missing.

To resolve the issue, get an employment letter from your employer. The letter shoudl state your title/designation, duration of employment and your annual salary. It would also be better if the letter states the salaries you received to date.

If you have further questions, Contact CIC via their Call Centre (1-888-242-2100) and ask them directly as to what you should do.
